I use a very simple wire frame. Intertwine the LEDs, and use that to form the base shape.

I'll prep cotton balls by dying groups of yellow, orange-yellow, brown or dark grey in 50%water-50% acrylic, ring out, let dry.

Try and pull the outermost layers. Starting w yellows, arrange/rearrange on the wire frame(LEDs on)as wanted.

Mixture of hodge podge matte and water, use a brush to saturate and shape bulges, adding the darker toned strips as desired.

Be mindful that the more strips, the less light will show thru, but I've found that a nice way to simulate the flame/smoke relationship on the edge of an explosion. And if overdone, it's not exactly tough to remove enough to start again.

Something else to mind, as it dries it will expand slightly. This will allow more light thru(good thing), but can also reveal whiter bits of the cotton. I'll sometimes loop wires around the exterior of the shape to hold it till dry, then remove them.

Dry brush dark brown and or grey over the high points, and a final coat of matte fixative.
